IARTEM
The International Association for Research on Textsbooks anda
Educational Media
The first independent and non profit international platform for
educational texts and media issues.
The International Association for Research on Textbooks and Educational Media is
a non-profit organization, independent of any institutional or commercial interest. The
registration office is in Paris, on the premises of the Institut national de recherche
pédagogique, 29 rue d´Ulm, 755005 Paris.
Why is IARTEM important?
Nowadays everybody is constantly surrounded by texts and images. Until recently
it was only in schools that these texts and images were made common to entire generations.
But the last few years have brought about some changes.
Learning outside school
Learning outside school has become a more and more important factor in many
countries. Due to new technological possibilities educational scenarios will change in the
near future, and more and more young people will have access to the new media confronting
them with new sorts of texts and images. In many countries young people engage less in
traditional reading. All these development lead to new requirements with respect to the
quality of educational texts.
Educational texts
Bad educational texts are a calamity for any nation and for every international
community, good quality texts are a bonanza and an investment in the future of many
nations. You cannot change the attitudes and ways of people who use educational texts.
What you can change, however, is the quality of textbooks, as well as the concept of
educational texts themselves. These texts therefore need the awareness of students,
teachers, writers, publishers and researchers.
IARTEM - main purposes
- To promote research on and understanding of textbooks and educational media.
- To establish regular contacts with all the parties interested in educational
media and textbook issues.
- To stimulate the inclusion of educational media and textbook issues in teache
education and teacher training.
IARTEM - target groups
IARTEM creates a new kind of forum for a number of professional groups which, so
far, have not had any common collegial frame for the exchange of insights and experiences.
Thus, the association meets the needs of many: writers, education and curriculum planners,
publishers, producers, teacher trainers and teachers, pedagoges, text analysts,
rhetoricians, methodologists, pedagogic philosophers, historians, applied linguists and
librarians.
IARTEM - membership
Membership can be given to professionals from all over the world working in the
fields related to textbook issues and educational media. Membership is individual.
IARTEM - activities
- Organises the Biennial International Conference for Research on Textbooks and
Educational Media to give members and potential members the possibility to present their
research and discuss it with other experts from different countries.
- Publishers conference volumes. IARTEM members can receive these at cost price.
