The rain pondered on Myrddraal's face as he rode his horse, beside him rode his friend. As he looked at him he realized that his friend was calmer now. He wouldn't just rush into something that easily could get him killed. But he dared not think of the consequences if his friend ran off without him. He had managed to talk him out off the revenge for now. But he knew that soon his friend would try to do something stupid, something that would indeed kill him.
They had managed to get some information about this Dark Lord fellow, they knew that he was a rich man and dangerous man, employed by Larosh a high lord from the city of Mordash. The high lords ruled the lands of Mordar. All the high lords were magicians but Larosh was the strongest of them all. They would get more information later. They just had to buy time, they would also need knowledge in the art of magic to defeat Larosh. Knowledge they didn't have right know.
Therefore Myrddraal had suggested that they could visit a friend of his, a friend with strong magic abilities that could match Larosh's. They would go to the mountain of Shara were Aginor lived. He would teach them a few tricks about the magic. Maybe he could even join them, they desperately needed companions on this mission. Although Moridin didn't think so Myrddraal was sure that he could make him realize it. He couldn't think of a better partner for this job, but Moridin thought only about his revenge. He thought he could just march in there and kill him, not thinking about the arrow or dagger that might hit him in the back. Aginor had once been a very famous magician, he had been arch-magician to the King of Haldir. But he thought himself to old for that kind of nonsense so he had settled down and lived a normal life.
Suddenly when they came to a cross four men jumped up from the woods, their knives drawn.
-Halt, said a man with a scar across his face. You must pay passage to enter this part of the woods. That would be 1000 gold coins each, grinned the man.
-That's outrageous, Moridin burst out. I won't pay that much.
-Well, either you do it or we might have to kill you and then we'll take all the coins you've got, said the man in a harsh voice.
In an instant Moridin had drawn his sword and Myrddraal his bow with an arrow knocked in it. Moridins eyes sparkled with rage when he burst out.
-I don't think you have the guts to fight us with your pathetic knives.
Just as he had spoken a dagger appeared in his hands and was thrown away just as quickly. A man clutched his throat were the dagger hilt stood out, then he fell down dead.
The other men turned and ran into the woods, terrified and they didn't dare look back.
-That was stupid, Myrddraal told Moridin in a quiet voice.
He didn't know if he would have done that, but it might have saved their life.
