Back in the late 80’s, when Franc Tiehuis is a guitarist of the thrashmetalband Desecrator, his musical interest is changing. After a few years into thrashmetal he had seen enough of that. He is more inspired by bands like Queensrÿche,Iron Maiden, Rainbow, Rush, Fates Warning, Metallica, Metal Church and Mercyful Fate. At that time he meets Erik Masselink at high school. Erik, then singer in the rockband Balderdash, shares the same musical interest.Several times they make the suggestion of playing music together. When Balderdash quits and Desecrator just about doesn’t exist anymore, it’s the time to do so. Erik and Franc start combining different styles; heavy, symphonic, melodic and technical. So at the beginning of the 90’s Franc and Erik spend time on widening and discovering their musical horizon. |

When, at the end of ’92, Erik and Franc seem to have found a suitable musical course and already have a lot of musical material and even more ideas, they think the time’s there to fill up the band. The first priority is to find a drummer, since listening (and talking) to a rhythmbox isn’t exactly mind-blowing. Easier said than done. After having co-operated with three drummers who, after a while, don’t appear to be suitable for the job, Franc and Erik almost give up hope. But then they meet Marcel Heitmann. Marcel proves to have the musical capability as well as the right attitude. |

When developing and working out the musical course, the three musicians decide at the beginning of ’94 that they need a bassplayer and a keyboardplayer to complete the band. Again a patience-demanding matter. Several bassplayers make an attempt, but no one fits in. One day a bassplayer brings along his friend. The bassplayer appears to be not the one who is searched for, but his friend proves to be a very talented guitarist with a pleasant personality and a votary of the musical style. So the bassplayer goes and Frank Schiphorst stays. |
Again the musical style is worked out, since many ideas are based on the intention of adding a keyboardplayer to the band, instead of a second guitarist. In the meantime the search for a suitable bassplayer goes on. At the end of ’94 the band is given the name Symmetry. A few months later a bassplayer is found in Gerrit Knol. So Symmetry is completed somewhere about half-way ’95. |

After almost two years of rehearsel and a few (try-out) gigs, the mini-cd "To Divinity" is recorded at the beginning of ‘97. Despite the fact that some labels are interested in bringing out the product, Symmetry isn’t taken with the incentives behind these interests. That’s why "To Divinity" is brought out under Symmetry’s own control in January ‘98. |
So far the four progressive rock/metal songs on "To Divinity" have had a favourable reception; only approving reviews have been received so far. Also may Symmetry enjoy very positive response during live performance, among which as support-act of bands like Saxon and Within Temptation, as headliner with bands like Harrow and a few times live on regional radio and television. |
In the middle of ‘98 the positive developments take an unpleasant turn, as, after about three years of original strength, the co-operation with the bassplayer is ended. The search for a suitable successor appears more frustrating than anticipated; again and again the combination of "basscontrol" and personality seems disappointing. After bassplayers of all sorts and conditions have seen the rehearsal room from inside and the desperation among the Symmetry members is starting to raise its head, they are confronted with the six-string bassmiracle Bas Hoebink. Bas proves pre-eminently to be the right person to complete
Symmetry. (Could it be else, if you realize that "bas" is the Dutch word for "bass"?) |
Nowadays the repertoire consists of eightteen own songs, with a total playing time of almost two hours. After a deliberate selection from the (usable) offers from a few record companies, it is agreed with the Dutch Zizania Etertainment Group to present a full-length cd about October next. Short-term the live performance will be resumed. |
