'In the Test of Times' is the follow up to Medalyon's 1996-release 'Visions', which won the band a reasonably big crowd of followers. This new release is a mix of melodic metal and progressive metal, powered by the two guitarists Robby Nemeth and Tommy Eframedes. The guitar riffs are heavy, yet melodic, and the overall powerful sound could be compared with the sound of Fates Warning. The disc, totaling 55 minutes, consists of 12 songs. All tracks capture a heavy melodic feel, which is skillfully powered by the guitars, but which also is compelled by the voice of Rick A. Shay. The singer, who once in a while, feels somewhat stiff, generally accomplishes a most potent vocal performance, and impresses with the powerful choruses. The rhythm section, consisting of Brian Glodde on bass and Ray Zale on drums and percussion, does a solid work. The first highlight on the album is the title track 'In the Test of Times', which briefly describes the melodic style of the following tracks. Other highlights are the far most progressive 'What's the Question', the beautiful 'Why', the heavy 'Crosses to Bear' and the last epic track titled 'Spiritual Things'. The production allows all instruments to come to their right and 'In the Test of Times' proves to be one of the heavier releases so far during -99.
