This is Trent Gardner's own band. He's the driving force behind the Explorers' Club first album ("Age Of Impact"). He stated that he
initiated the Explorers Club because he wanted some of his music played by better musicians than he is himself, in other words:
Explorers Club is better than Magellan(?). I have both records, and I must say that from the point of soloing and technique this
statement might be true, but when you look at the song material Magellan is better, and certainly more progressive! The music is
best described as the early seventies' Yes going heavy and also going a little bit more promessive (my word for structured chaos and
originality). The production is very good, and there are a lot of nice tricks and sounds added. Intros with an old recording on vinyl
gradually flowing into the song is just one example of this. Magellan is a trio, with Trent Gardner on lead vocals, keyboards and
trombone (!). Wayne Gardner (his brother?) plays the guitars and basses and sings the backing vocals and Brad Kaiser plays drums
and percussion. The album might be a concept album (I'm not really sure) about the difficulties and lies you have to cope with in your
life, and more specifically (in the song "Preaching The Converted") in the music business. The above mentioned similarities with Yes
are in the use of vocals and keyboards, besides that this band could be one of the hopes for progressive music in the next millenium.
