STILL LIFE
Written by Wilfred de Bruijn

This is the first official live recording of this cult band from the USA. It was recorded in several places in Europe on April 16-26 1998. The sound is very good. It's a double CD with an interesting tracklist on it, which covers the history of the band from "Awaken The Guardian" to "A Pleasant Shade Of Grey". The first CD has the complete live version of the last album on it. It's a choice made by the band, and they have played it very well, but when you place it next to the studio recording they aren't very different. Fates Warning isn't a very experimental band in live situations. The second CD is much more interesting in my opinion. Especially the epic "The Ivory Gate Of Dreams" from the 1991 album "No Exit" is one of my favorites. It's a shame the band seems to deny it's past when playing live. The track "Prelude to Ruin" from "Awaken The Guardian" is the oldest track played, but I would have liked some more tracks from the more distant past. They started as a progressive brother of Iron Maiden with even some occult lyrics. Some songs of this period would be killer when played live. But as a whole this album is a very good opportunity for interesed progfans who want to get a good collection of songs of Fates Warning on one album.
