FEARS
Written by Christian Axén

This is Clypsydras third release. This five-piece band is located in Czechoslovakia and consists of Aluiso Maggini (vocals), Marco Cerulli (guitars & sax), Philip Hubert (keyboards), Andy Thommen (bass) and Pietro Duca (drums & percussion). All the music is written by Clepsydra.

'Fears' total playtime is almost 63 minutes and the track length span between about 3 minutes to about 10 minutes. Unfortunately I haven't heard Clepsydra before, so a comparison with previous albums is rather difficult to make. I get the feel that this band try to put you in a certain mood, the music is always soft with beautiful arrangements where the keyboard serves as background. This is NOT heavy, and the only fair definition would be soft progressive rock.

Aluisio Maggini's voice is pleasant, but you can hear a slight accent, but that is nothing that effects the overall judgement. The guitar-, bass- and drum work is good, nothing really special but still satisfying.

The first track titled 'Soaked', presents the subtle sound of the entire album. A feel of mysticism and the sense of a dream world come in mind. The relaxed progressive rock sound is significant for 'Soaked', not fast, not heavy. The following five songs are like the previous one, very low-tempo and calm. The sixth track is an acoustic guitar piece, something that adds variety to 'Fears'. The following four tracks, I consider as the best and the most progressive. A sax plays a role on track eight, really great.

The sound isn't crunchy; it's of a softer kind, and that is a really negative thing. It's hard to find parts on 'Fear', that deserves the outburst of WOW. Sure, it's beautiful music, but beautiful isn't enough to make a perfectly good album.

The production is great and the arrangements are good, but the need of heavier and more varied tracks makes 'Fear' somewhat incomplete. Consequently for you who like more slow soft progressive rock, 'Fear' is something for you.
