1953 Mercury
unified design

The 1953 Mercury had a smoother, cleaner good look, with the lower, longer, ready-to-go appearance of Mercury Unified Design. It was a pretty modern car 1953, and the "unified design" stod for things like: A big (1153 sq in.) one-piece rear window; One-piece windshield; Down-sweep hood for better, safer forward visibility; Bumper-grille combined in single unit; Cushion-coil springs team with direct-acting hydraulic shock absorbers in the front suspension; Variable-rate springs for better riding over any road, springs stiffen under heavy loads, and return to normal softness when bump is passed; Combination tail lamps provide housing for rear lights. Tail lamps and bumper combine in Unified Design feature; Better balanced chassis and safety-steel body; Two-stop doors let you stop the front doors either half-way or full-open; Stedi-line steering precision designed for easier, better control; Suspended brake pedal for clear front floor; Welded steel top, fashionable flat contour with continous drip rail abobe windshield. Narrow roof overhang permits larger windows and doors; Space-planned interiors with seats placed far forward in "comfort zone" for best riding. Plenty of leg room, head room, elbow room for strech-out relaxation; Instrument panel is continuation of hood line with carries through to inside of car in Mercury's Unified Design. There's not an unnecessary line or contour on the Mercury; Package tray carries rear deck contour into interior. A feature of Unified Design that lends an indoor-outdoor feeling. The smart mordern look; Rear deck contour serves purpose and adds style in Unified Design. Provides up to 30 cubic feet trunk capacity.
