Ethymology
The outer tepals are often strongly reflexed at anthesis giving a somewhat conical apperance of the flower, coniflorus (lat.) = conic flower.

History
Not much is known about the history of this species, probably because it is often confused with S. grandiflorus.

Origin and habitat
E Mexico (Vera Cruz & Tabasco). Terrestrial or epiphytic

Systematics
This is a species of the S. grandiflorus -complex and merely a form of that species. Differs from S. grandilorus in more robust stems, fewer fibs, larger flowers and white floral hairs (rather than brownish).

Cultivation
An easily cultivated, fast growing epiphyte or terrestrial plant. Needs a compost containing plenty of humus and sufficient moisture in summer. Should not be kept under 5ºC (41ºF) in winter. Perform best if grown in full sun. Extra light in the early spring will stimulate budding. Flowers in late spring or early summer.
