This is an interspecific Hylocereus-cross between the red-flowered Hylocereus stenopterus (pod-parent) and Hylocereus undatus
(pollen-parent). The epicific epithet is derived from stenopterus x undatus.
´Kathy Van Arum´ is a sister-seedling to ´Connie Mayer´, but it is different in some
way. The flowers are somewhat larger (more than 12 inches in dia.) and lighter red the sepals almost edged light pink. However, I have seen the blooms only once so far and you know that colors are
subject to change depending on temperature, humidity etc. But what I can assure you is that at least ´Connie Mayer´ is a tremendous grower and not tender at all, which could not be expected the
"mother" (H. stenopterus) being extremely tender to low temperatures and excessive watering. The seedling (and probably ´Kathie Van Arum´, too) grows very fast (at least as well as
H. undatus) and can stand a lot of sunshine, at least in Germany. My friend Klaus Rippe grows it outside his greenhouse on his estate in Spain.
