Pond maintenance
To provide a healthy and safe environment for koi
Provide 250-300 gallons of water per 24
inch fish, resist overstocking
remove fallen leaves and other debris from
pond bottom
keep skimmers and basket strainers from
getting clogged with matter
run biological filter 24 hours a day, keep
covered to keep light out
if the filter medium is gravel, it should
be raked once a week to keep it loose . the passage of water
needs to be unhindered, aerobic bacteria
requires a constant flow of oxygen
biological filters of any media should
often be checked for channeling. if the water is allowed to find
the way of least resistance, the rest of
the filter will become stagnant and no oxygen is provided for
the aerobic bacteria
periodically back wash biological filter
feed fish only as much as they eat within
three minutes
make sure that food pellets are fresh
store food in air tight containers to keep
from oxidizing
during the winter months do not feed if
water is below 54 degrees
replace 10% of pond volume with fresh water
per week, making sure that the chlorin or chloramine
content of the replacement water is neutralized
or removed
some pumps and also the lids of some basket
strainers need to be periodically lubricated. follow
manufacturer's recommendations
keep area around pump free of leaves and
other debris
the area of a fishpond should
be fenced to keep small children from coming to harm!
