The history of Göteborg

The name Göteborg appeared for the first time briefly between 1607 and 1611 at what is now the northern end of the Älvsborgs bridge on the island, Hisingen. This and other settled areas were destroyed during conflicts between Sweden and the then so powerful Denmark.

Dutch salesmen built up the modern Göteborg. They used the cityplan of Amsterdam with the network of canals because Göteborg had the same marshy ground as Amsterdam. The canals served as transportation, drainage, sewerage and water supply for the people. Gustaf II Adolf was the king who found modern Göteborg the year of 1621. He is now reproduced as a statue standing on a square called "Gustaf Adolfs Torg". It's a very famous statue in the city.

Increased of trade and shipping made it possible for Göteborg to grow. In the 18th century the town was the headquarters of the Swedish East India company (a shipping line with Swedish rights to the eastern trade routes, as far China). Tea, Chinaware and the luxury goods of the period were brought into Sweden this way. By mid - 18th century Göteborg had 10 000 inhabitants. During the 19th century, Göteborg was industrialised and grow from 13 000 people in 1800 to 130 000 in 1900.

Göteborg currently has close to 500.000 inhabitants and is the second largest city of sweden, only the Capital, Stockholm is larger.

Some places worth to be seen:

Start your day in the great city with a trip to "Älvsborgs fästning" , it is a nice fort used for defending Göteborg from the horrible danish a long time ago. After that trip you maybe should relax in slottskogen, a big park not far away from the centre of the city. In slottskogen there is a little zoo and big areas for playing ball games or just sit down and relax with an icecream.

Relax for some hours before you leave for the next great park, "Liseberg" . Liseberg is the greatest park in Sweden and contains attractions for the entire family. Fun for all ages and don´t hesitate even if you are more than 70, because there are always an attraction for just you. But the most famous part in the city is probably "Avenyn" . Avenyn is a long street, about two Kilometers and at the end of the street, is a square called götaplatsen laying. The square is surrounded by several large buildings: museum, library, theater and so on.
