Uddevalla - The heart of Bohuslän

With Uddevalla as your base you are within easy reach of the rest av Bohuslän, whatever means of transport you use. The E6 passes close to the center of the town. The local passenger boats dock at the jetty in the town center. The centrally located bus and taxi terminal - where you also find the Tourist Office - is the main terminal for the bus network of Bohuslän.

 

Uddevalla is conveniently situated, right in the center of Bohuslän. It is really like Bohuslän in miniature, with its 220 km long coastline, which provides many excellent harbours and beaches.

 

The atmosphere is friendly and hospitable. Uddevalla is an interesting place with a lot to see and do. You will enjoy a walk along the main shopping street of Kungsgatan to the square of Torget, with its lovely 19th centary buildings. The river of Bäveån, which runs through the town center, is lined by beautiful lime-trees.

Bohusläns museum

Where the area´s industrial and social history is presented in a very vivid fashion. You will find no dusty shelves in this museum. Instead, you are welcome to touch the fabric of history and enjoy the various activities. No entrance fee. The museum caféoffers specialty food of the area.

 

The Shellbanks

At the outskirts of Uddevalla is the world´s largest shell deposit situated. The up to 13 metres high banks contain fossils of more than 100 animal species. Skeletal parts of the following vertrbrates have been found; cod, ling, halibut, Swedenborg´s whale, white whale, whitebeaked dolphin, common porpoise, bearded seal, ringed seal, Atlantic seal, polar bear, reindeer and eider. The shellbanks were formed approx. 10 000 years ago when the land ice withdrew from Bohuslän. The chalky ground nourishes a rich flora, which is dominated by small alison, blue fleabane and hairy rockcress.

Gustavsberg

This is one of the oldest seaside resorts in Sweden. At Gustavsberg once royalties and the nobility had cold baths, drank from the well, strolled in the parks and at night sat in the porches drinking their Swedish punch. The embellished old houses are splendidly embedded in flourishing parks. In the summer there is a caféand a restaurant open and sometimes outdoor concerts can be enjoyed. The picture shows one of the old buildings which nowadays accommodates a youth hostel.
