Tappi Tikarrass "Miranda"
Björk joined Tappi Tikarrass in 1981 after the demise of Exodus. They
released two albums "Bitid fast i hvitid" and "Miranda" before they went
their separate ways. "Miranda" was released in December 1983 and it became
the band's last breath. Björk became a member of KUKL, already in September
1983, before the demise of Tappi Tikarrass, but still I'd say there's quite
a big difference between Tappi and KUKL. Tappi Tikarrass' music was a lot
more laidback than the gothic sound of KUKL. They played a cross between
jazz, punk and pop. Their music was very varied and in some places you can
even trace some disco-influences. Tappi Tikarrass had a male vocalist too.
His name was Eythor Arnald, he was also the guitar-player and he did all
the vocals before Björk entered the band in 1981. Björk's doing
the major parts of vocals on "Miranda" since Eythor only sings in three songs.
But the Björk/Eythor-duets were never as intensive as the
Björk/Einar-duets and Eythor's voice is not as stunning as Einar's voice
at all.
You've probably found out by now, Tappi's music was not at all as good as
KUKL's music. The laidback sound of Tappi's probably the least experimental
Björk-act ever. But "Miranda" is still a good "pop-record" and it contains
some really good songs such as "Krid", a highly melodic pop-song or "Tjet",
a melancholy pop-song, which suddenly bursts into a disco-track. What's most
stunning about the record is Björk's voice. She was younger than me
when she recorded this album, but her vocals are as great as on the "Post"-album.
It was during this punk-era Björk developed her very unique singing
style. You can't compare Tappi's music to any of Björk's later works,
but "Miranda" is still a great album....for fanatics.
