Björk "Violently happy"
A lot of the lyrics on the "Debut"-disc are autobiographical. "Violently happy" is about living in the small town of Reykjavik and being in love with someone on the other side of the planet (Dom T seems to have influenced quiet a lot of the lyrics on the album). "For me, it's quite a brave thing. It's like putting your diary out for everyone to read. Of course, I didn't put everything in, I very carefully edited it. I'm very good with scissors", Björk explained to the NME.
"Violently happy" is one of the hardcore techno-tracks on the album and it became the album's fourth and last single in 1994. The single got two CD EPs. One with no less than seven remixes made by artists such as Nelleh Hooper, Fluke, Masters at work (they gave us The Bucketheads) and Graham Massey, and one disc with live-versions of "The anchor song", "Come to me" and "Human behaviour". Jean-Baptiste Mondino directed a video for the song, where Björk unstuffs a teddy-bear and puts scissors into dolls inside a padded, cell. MTV found the video a bit too violent so when they showed the video it received a formal warning from The Independent Television Commission.
Björk flied to Los Angeles to shoot the video in January 1994. The town was hit by an earthquake when she arrived and Björk who had never experienced such a natural phenomen before, loved it. "I always thought it would be this really nervous thing. But it was this really deep, big bass in your guts. I thought: Yes! This is what I've wanted to feel ever since I was born. It's funny, it's like your body is thirsty for it and it satisfies you in a strange way", Björk explained. After the earthquake, all the people from the record-company tried to get a hold of Björk to see if she was alright but by then she had gone to the film-studio to shoot the video.
