Björk "Venus as a boy"
Björk wrote "Venus as a boy" about her then-boyfriend Dom T. It was
one of the last tracks she wrote for the "Debut"-album and she wanted it
to sound like an Indian soundtrack. The strings are arranged by Talvin Singh
and recorded in Bombay. Björk claimed "Venus as a boy" was about a boy
who saw everything from a beauty point of view. "And not superficial beauty
but the beauty of brushing your teeth and the beauty of waking up in the
morning in the right beat and the beauty of having a conversation with a
person. All that was new to me as I tend to look at things from an energy
point of view".
"Venus as a boy" became the album's second single in August 1993 though the
record-company didn't expect it to become a hit single. Björk decided
to start releasing two CD EPs for each single to give room for more remixes.
The first CD contains the original version of the song, a remix by Mykaell
Riley and Björk's own mixes of "There's more to life than this" and
"Violently happy". The second CD contains "Stidgu Mig" (title can be translated
as "Step" in "Get me going"), one of the 11 tracks Björk recorded together
with KUKL-guitarist Gud Krist under the name The Elgar Sisters in 1987, a
cover of "I remember you", Björk recorded together with harp-player
Corky Hale in 1991, a remix of "The anchor song" by techno-trio Black Dog
and a remix of the title-track made by one of Björk's greatest fans,
Mick Hucknall of Simply Red (!!!!), who claimed Björk to be the Billie
Holiday of the 90s and beyond. Sophie Muller directed a video for the song,
where Björk's rolling eggs across her face and upper body before she
fries them. Here are some images from the video.
