Björk "Play dead"
"Play dead" wasn't originally written for the "Debut"-disc. David Arnold was asked to put together a soundtrack for the movie "Young Americans" about London in the 90s. He asked Björk to write a song for the film. The song had to be angst-ridden and painful to match the emotions of the movie's main-character. David Arnold gave her a page of phrases that represented the character's emotions. Björk only used one of the phrases: "Sometimes it just like sinking". When she had written the melody-line and the lyrics, David Arnold arranged strings for it. The result was a mighty rock-ballad and Björk's first Top 30 hit. Her manager Derek Birkett convinced her to add the track to "Debut". "Debut" sold about 500 000 more copies with "Play dead" as a bonus-track. About 100 people who already owned the album called to the record-company and complained and they were given new records as compensation.
