Björk "Army of me"
Björk wrote "Army of me" together with Graham Massey back in 1992 and
this is her description of the song: "Imagine you're in a club full of
heavy metal types and grunge people. Army of me is like someone's granny
blasting out over the PA and saying Snap out of it!Stop whining! Wash your
hair! Smarten yourself up!" The song became the album's first single
in April 1995 and she performed it on Top of the pops together with Skunk
Anasie. She couldn't have been more unpredictable!
When Björk recorded "Army of me"she didn't want anyone to be able to
spot any emotions in her voice. The song only contains Björk's voice,
drums and the grooviest bass-line around. The melody-line neither contains
any light nor shade nuances so I'd say "Army of me" was quite a strange choice
for a single. On the two CD EPs you find remixes by Skunk Anasie, ABA Allstars,
two more "Post"-songs ("Cover me" and an Icelandic version of "You've been
flirting again") and "Sweet intuition", a song Björk wrote together
with Black Dog. Michel Goundry directed a video for this song, where
Björk's travelling around in one of the biggest trucks around. All of
a sudden the truck stops because it needs a new teeth. Björk goes to
the dentist to find a teeth for her truck. The dentist (who's actually a
gorilla) finds a diamond in Björk's mouth and steals it. Björk
takes back the diamond and runs away with it. While she's running the diamond
grooves bigger and bigger 'til she gives t to her truck. "The video for
Army of me is so much about me having to defend myself", Björk
explained. "If the gorilla would have taken the diamond, then it would
have grown tiny small and everyone just think that's nonsense". The video
ends up with Björk blowing up a museum. A joke dedicated to all conservative
people on this planet. Anyway, it's one of the coolest videos I've ever
seen....here are some stills.

The words
Stand up
And if you complain once more
You're alright
And if you complain once more
You're on your own now
And if you complain once more |
