Well, the problem with the 'Cubes is that they were never meant to be

remixed. I think the only good mix on that entire "it's it" disc is the

one for "blue eyed pop." the rest is pretty horrid (though the mixes for

"water" and "mama" are interesting... who needs them?).

Everything went bad for the SugarCubes after the first record. Originally

it was just a beautiful 11-track masterpiece. Surreal lyrics, sinister

music... some of the best musicianship around and strangest song-structures

for pop songs this side of Iceland.

Then it was re-released with the b-sides, a couple icelandic tracks, and

and AWFUL AWDFUL remix of "coldsweat". Hideous.

Next:

I am in London, September 1989. The second album is released... wasn't

sure what to make of it at the time. "Planet" is still my favourite Bjork

moment EVER... It's a few songs too long, but hey... unfortunate that the

cassette and CD versions tag on those two instrumentals and the country and

western version of "coldsweat"... "Here Today tomorrow, next week" was

only meant to be a 13-track album... By this time, the band had

transformed into the B-52s from Mars. Performed live these songs must have

seemed like bad performance art. But there is something about "tidal

wave," "pump," "water," and "a day called zero" i adore... other songs,

like "speed is the key," "nail," and "eat the menu" i can do without. the

jokes are only so funny the first time around.

third record....

uh....

well, obviously they'd been in the dance clubs enough to know that they

wanted to do something different.... unfortunately the record is marred by

jumpy drums throughout and no real dynamic range. i blame it on the

producer. "gold" and "hit" grove along quite nicely, but then it just

becomes repeditive... "vitamin" and "hetero scum" are frightening. by now

it is clear that Einar serves no useful purpose in the band. Low point:

"nurse" AUGH! And all that clever instrumentation which made the first

two records so good has vanished into plainess.... BOO.

anyway.... that's my rant....

where are they now?
