Björk "Post"
"Post" is even better than "Debut". Believe me, it's absolutely true. I'm
not lying. "Post" is more electric than "Debut" but that's not the reason.
"Post" is just a little bit stronger when it comes to song-writing, maybe
you can say that "Post" is one adjust more than "Debut". But please, let's
get out of this review-thing for a while. They're both fantastic album and
if I should mention the ten greatest albums I've heard in my life, then they're
both there. And they both tear the ground under your feet.
1. "Army of me"
Björk must have had an earthquake on her mind when she created the albums opening track "Army of me". It has got the roughest bass-line and the roughest drums that'll ever existed on a "pop-album". Though the track has only got drums, bass and Björk's voice singing a pretty simple melody is it excellent. A weird song that wakes up the listener.
2. "Hyper-ballad"
This is something so unusual as a etno/techno-ballad. In the beginning it doesn't sound to exciting. Synthetic drums mixed with a pretty unsteady melody. It doesn't make the listener excited until the chorus. The chorus is an unforgettable masterpiece that's more beautiful than the final sunset. Then it stays beautiful all the way until the grateful ending. I think this is the song on the album with the best chances to become a single-hit even it doesn't sound like what single-hits often sounds like.
3. "The modern things"
Some more techno for your listening pleasure. This song has got synthetic drums and all that stuff. Björk is singing in Icelandic sometimes. I can't complain about much on this song, I find it simply OK.
4. "It's oh so quiet"
Well, after you've heard three techno-songs on an album you don't really expect that the fourth track is a cover of an old jazz/big band-song. Björk is the only person I know of who handles jazz/big band-covers with the same skill as techno-tracks. In this track she's exploring the possibilities of her own voice together with a wind-orchestra. It all ends up with Björk making her best scream ever on an album. With "It's oh so quiet" Björk's trying further one more category.
5."Enjoy"
At this track she's returning to the synthesizers together with trip hop-artist Tricky. "Enjoy" is a dark industrial track with filthy drum-machines working together with filthy keyboards. It brings your thoughts away to Nine Inch Nails for a little while. The track ends up with a very interesting trumpet-solo.
6. "You've been flirting again"
A very short track where Björk is alone with a string-orchestra. A very beautiful song thought it's hardly three minutes long.
7. "Isobel"
This is the albums best track, maybe Björk's best track ever! It starts with a grateful effort from an orchestra. Suddenly the orchestra keeps quiet for a while and instead a dub-rythm takes over. Björk's voice comes in and follows the dub for a while. Then the orchestra enter once more together with the fantastic chorus and the result is as impressing as it's grateful. Björk has on the track "Isobel" created a fantastic melody and then she has arranged it the most grateful way that's possible. It's not often you hear a song like "Isobel" where everything comes together just the way you want it. "Isobel" is also one of the reasons why Björk is the greatest pop-singer for a very long time. Sometimes I doubt that Björk wrote this song by herself. It sounds so great that it has to be written by aliens that are more civilized and developed than we are.
8. "Possibly maybe"
If I absolutely have to categorize this song as something I guess I have to call it a slow and silent spiritual underground-ballad. The melody on this track is not very easy to masticate. It takes a little bit more from the listener and if you just pay attention to the melody you find out how beautiful it is. It's a very sad song with lots of special effects such as dial-tones, "vinyl-cracking" and spiritual background-vocals that makes it even better. This is also a very impressing masterpiece, believe me.
9."I miss you"
"I miss you" starts as a techno-track with drum-machines, keyboards and samples but suddenly all the instruments get changed for trumpets and bongo-drums and the whole song turns into a samba instead. Very interesting track!
10. "Cover me"
My least favorite on this album. It doesn't turn into anything better than a slow, ambient track played on a harp.
11."Headphones"
Very experimental song. It doesn't really have a melody, it's more like an
atmosphere containing some tones. Tricky has been helping Björk with
the making of this song and it makes me just as impressed as the other tracks.
A really harmonic piece of work.
