A.B. CHUBAIS
Anatoly Chubais is the First Deputy Prime Minister of Russia. Prior to
this promotion, making him the third highest-ranking member of the
Russian government, he was a Deputy Prime Minister of Russia and
Chairman of the Russian I State Property Committee. He is the principal
architect of the privatization program and a key figure in Russian
economic reform. He is a member of the Parliament and one of the leaders
of the Russia's Choice faction in the Parliament.
I.P. RYBKIN
Ivan Rybkin is currently the Speaker of Parliament. A member of the Agrarian
party, Rybkin is head of Soglasie, the new left-center block in
parliament. Rybkin in known as a non confrontational consensus builder
and a master of political compromise. He consistently stresses the
importance of stability as the critical ingredient for progress and
development. His policies are based on social-democratic methods for
gradually strengthening the economy and the state.
G. YAVLINSKY
Grigori Yavlinsky is one of the youngest and most visionary economists
in Russia. He was the main author of the famous "500 Day" economic plan
of 1990, which collaborated with Harvard University on developing
sweeping plans for radical economic restructuring in the former USSR. He
now runs Epicenter, a consulting organization that advises the Russian
government. He is a member of Parliament where he is leader of Yabloko,
one of the main democratic reformist parties. Many public opinion polls
show him as the most popular candidate in next year's presidential
elections.
A. VOLSKY
Arkady Volsky is Chairman of the Union of Industrialists and
Entrepreneurs of Russia, and Chairman of the Civic Union, the first
major non Communist opposition to Yeltsin's government of radical
economic reforms. He insists that radical economic reforms should be
pur~ucd with greater attention to Asian development models rather than
focusing on a liberal Western pattern of economic development. He is the
preeminent leader of the heavy-industry lobby and the creator of the
first major centrist political movement in post Communist Russia. More
recently he has been a special presidential envoy to Chechnya where he
has played an active roll in securing peace in the region.
G. ZYUGANOV
Zyuganov was formerly the main ideologue of the RSFSR. He is now the
leader of the new generation of Russian Communists. He is the Chairman
of the Central Executive Committee of the Communist Party of the Russian
Federation and the leader of his party's faction in the Parliament. He
is convinced of the possibility of uniting the nationalist-state and the
socialist idea, and believes he holds authority among the patriotic
elements of Russian society.
N. TRAVKIN
Nikolai Travkin is the founder of the Democratic Party of Russia. He is
one of the principal leaders among the centrists in the Parliament.
Since 1991 he has headed the Shahovskoi region just outside of Moscow.
Before perestroika he became a Hero of Socialist Labor, revered by the
ideologues of communism for his life as a carpenter, mason and
bricklayer. He became a working-class icon as he rose in the Communist
Party and the Congress of People's Deputies. In a stunning display of
opposition, Travkin resigned from the CPSU in March of 1990. In May 1994
Travkin was named the first Minister-at-Large, researching local
grass-roots reform options.
B.P. LUKIN
Lukin is currently Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Relations in the
Parliament. From 1992 to 1993, he was Ambassador to the United States,
prior to which he had been a member of the Parliament. Lukin is a
professor and holds a Ph. D. in History. He is known for his active
position and progressive views, veering away from both extremes
currently found in Russian politics. He is against the way reforms are
currently being carried out and supports a more moderate approach that
would ease the burden on the majority of Russians. He is for a
democratic Russian state with strict control of executive power by the
Federal Assembly.
K. BOROVOI
Konstantin Borovoi, owner of one of Russia's largest private fortunes,
has become a name commonly associated with success and wealth in the new
Russia. In the last few years, Borovoi, never a member of the CPSU, has
catapulted to the upper echelons of economic and political power. Since
1990 he has been President of the Russian National Commerce Bank,
Chairman of the Board of the Agency of Economic News, Chairman of the
Board of the Russian Investment Company, and Co-chairman of the Russian
Federation's Foreign Policy Federation. In May 1992 Borovoi cast his
considerable wealth and power into the political arena when he became
Co-chairman of the free-market-oriented Economic Freedom Party.
E. SAGALAYEV
Sagalayev is Chairman of the Board of the Moscow Independent
Broadcasting Corporation TV-6. He has worked with Ted Turner and CNN in
producing programs, and has anchored several television and radio shows.
He has also been Co chairman of the Commission on Television Policy,
First Vice-President of the Russian State Television and Radio
Broadcasting Company, and President of the ConfederationofJournalists'
Unions.Between 1988and 1990Sagalayev was head of the leading prime-time
news show Vremya.
A. SHOKHIN
Alexander Shokhin recently resigned in protest from his post as Deputy
Prime Minister of Russia, responsible for foreign trade and relations
with the newly independent states. He is a member of the Parliament, one
of the leaders of the Party of Russian Unity and Accord, and also a
member of the Board of Directors for the International Monetary Fund. He
is a well known economist and one of the youngest full Academicians at
the Academy of Sciences.
A.M. BRJACHIKIN
Since 1968, Brjachikin has been working in various government
structures. He is considered to be one of the most well-known and
experienced political leaders in Russia. Formerly a member of the
Politburo of the Russian Communist Party, he is now Prefect of the
Western Region of Moscow, one of the city's eleven districts. Brjachikin
received a Ph.D. in Economics and has written several books, including
The Responsibility of Power and Power in the City.
M. ZAKHAROV
Zakharov is among the most famous Russian theatrical producers. He is
the Director of Moscow's LenKom theatre. His work has met with much
critical and popular acclaim among both Russians and foreigners. He is
also a filmmaker and has written many books on theater. He made
headlines when early on he publicly offered to help bury Lenin in St.
Petersburg.
I. KHAKAMADA
Khakamada is a member of the Parliament, elected as an independent
candidate, and is a member of the Committee on Economic Policy. She is
among Russia's leading figures in the growing women's movement. She is
also President of the Liberal Women's Foundation, a member of the
Council on Industrial Politics and Business in the government of the
Russian Federation, and a member of the Council on External Politics in
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Her father was a well-known Japanese
Communist who emigrated to the Soviet Union in 1939.
A. Y. KARPOV
From 1975 to 1985, Anatoly Karpov was the World Champion in chess. In
1993 he recovered the title. Born in 1951, he became the champion of the
youth division in 1969 and received the rank of international
grandmaster in 1970. He has been the President of the International
Association of Peace Funds since 1982 and the President of the
international organization Chernobyl-Aid since 1989
G. BURBULIS
From 1991-1992, Burbulis was First Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, and
then became the State Secretary. In these roles he came into conflict
with the leadership. He spoke out against the nationalist-patriotic and
Communist bureaucratic attempts to gain power, and eventually resigned
from his post.
E. SHAPOSHNIKOV
From 1990 to 1991, Shaposhnikov was the Commander of the Air Force for
the Soviet Union, and in 1991 he became the last Minister of Defense for
the USSR. Prior to the August 1991 putsch he was a member of the Central
Committee of the Communist Party. From 1992 to 1993 he was Head of the
Joint Armed Forces of the CIS. Currently he is the President's
representative in the Rosvoruzheniya weapons agency, a government
corporation in charge of all export and import of arms for Russia.
Y. LIGACHEV
Yegor Ligachev, former Politburo member of the Central Committee of the
CPSU, led the orthodox opposition in the Communist Party against
Gorbachev ' s policy of perestroika and the breakup of the USSR.
Previously, Ligachev had been elected People's Deputy of the Soviet
Union, along with other individuals on the so-called List of One Hundred
(all nominated by the CPSU). Ligachev was involved in the CPSU trial at
the Russian Federation's Constitutional Court which examined the
constitutionality of Yeltsin's decree banning the Communist Party. He
still argues that the abolition of the Soviet Union was an illegal act.
G. YAGODIN
Yagodin is currently Rector of The International University of Moscow,
professor of Chemistry, member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and
Deputy Director of the International Agency for Atomic Energy. He was
the Minister of Education of the USSR under Gorbachev.
I. GLAZUNOV
Ilya Glazunov is tke most famous Russian painter living in Russia. His
greatest recognition and popularity have stemmed from his paintings of
Russian historical and national subjects. Some of his work was
prohibited by the communist regime. He is currently the Director of the
Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.
A. PUGACHEVA
Pugacheva is the reigning queen of popular music in Russia and the
former Soviet Union. She is the country's most popular entertainer. She
is a famous singer and composer, the producer and director of the
Theater of Song, and the winner of many prizes and awards. She graduated
from the Musical College and State Theater Institute.
A.V. OLIGOV
Oligov is currently a member of and Spokesman for the Security Service
of the President of Russia. Among other tasks this department manages
the personal security of the top officials in the Russian government,
including President Yeltsin. A former professional KGB operative, Oligov
was Chief of the Center of Public Relations of the Russian KGB. He was
an active participant in the radical changes that swept through the
agency after the aborted 1991 coup and the dismissal of the old order.
V. SMIRNOV
As Vice President of the International Olympic Committee and Chairman of
the Russian Olympic Committee, Smirnov set up an amalgamated CIS team
after the breakup of the USSR which successfully performed in
Albertville and Barcelona. Subsequently, Smirnov was among the first
individuals, together with Samaranch, to be awarded the Leonardo-Sport
award and the IOC's golden order.
V.V. AKSIUCHITS
Currently the leader of the Russian Christian Democratic Movement,
Aksiuchits resigned in protest from the CPSU in 1979. He was elected to
the Russian Parliament in 1990 as a strong
anti-Communistandaproponentofthedemocratic movement. Although he stayed
to defend Yeltsin and the Parliament building during the attempted
Communist coup in 1991, his opposition to manyofYeltsin's subsequent
policies led him to become a leader in the anti-Yeltsin movement. He
rejected Yeltsin's decree disbanding the old Parliament and remained in
the Parliament building until only a few hours before the final armed
clash between Yeltsin and Parliament in October '93. He recently
resigned his leadership position in the Derzhava movement, headed by the
former Vice-President of Russia, Alexander Rutskoi.
A. AGEYEV
As Chief of the Department for Strategic Planning and Development of the
Ministry of Foreign Economic Affairs and Co-chairman of the Council of
Entrepreneurs at the Ministry, Ageyev was repeatedly faced with bleak
reports of Russia's economic future, yet always remained optimistic that
Russia's economy can soon be internationally competitive. He has sought
to prove this true in his current post as Head of Strategic Analysis
Department tor Moscow Aircraft Production Group, which produces Russia's
new MIG-29 and MIG-31 airplanes, 18 of which were recentiy sold to
Malaysia for $500 million.
G. SHAKNAZAROV
Shaknazarov is the Director of the Center for Global Research at the
Gorbachev Foundation and a Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy
of Science. Formerly a member of Gorbachev's personal staff,
Shaknazarov, with Primakov, authored much of the "new thinking" on
foreign policy, mutual security and arms control. as a strong advocate
of decentralization, Shaknazarov praised Western social democracy while
an official at the Central Committee.
PRINCE GOLYTSIN
The Golytsin family holds one of the most noble names in the Russian
register. The Prince is the grandson of the last mayor of Moscow before
the revolution. He is now chairman of the Assembly of Russian Nobility.
He is an ardent supporter of a limited reinstitution of Russian gentry
and a restoration of the Tsar. He emphasizes the importance of the
gentry in the resurrection of a new Russia. The Prince is one of few
highly-placed gentry to survive the purges while remaining in Russia
T. GDLYAN
Gdlyan is Co-chairman of the People's Party of Russia and Chairman of
the All-Russian Foundation for Progress, Human Rights and Charity.
During the pereslroika era Gdlyan became famous leading the
investigations of the USSR Procurator's Office, handling corruption
cases of top party and government leaders. Gdlyan was the first to
publicly oppose mafia components in the USSR's power structures and
became a much-loathed figure by the CPSU.
M.G. ASTAFIEV
Astafiev is chairman of the Constitutional Democratic Party (The Party
of People's Freedom) of Russia. He is also one of the founders, as well
as chairman, of the National Right Center, the main task of which is "to
defend the national interests of Russia and fight for reunification of
the Russian people in the framework of a single government." He
considers himself a critic of both communism and liberalism.
S. YUSHENKOV
Colonel Yushenkov is the Chairman of the Committee on Defense in the
Parliament. He was one of the main organizers of the Russia's Choice
faction, and became its Executive Secretary. He is a professor of
philosophy at the Armed Forces Academy. He firmly believes and always
stresses that the Army must remain under civilian control.
E. YAKUSHENKO
Yakushenko is the head of the Moscow Municipal Housing Authorities.
Faced with addressing the problematic housing situation, a key social
issue in Russia, he believes the answer to the dilemma is to establish a
stable real-estate market. He views the current construction programs as
too expensive and time-consuming.
N.A. ANDREYEVA
General Secretary and leader of the All-Union Bolshevik Communist Party,
Nina Andreyeva has been one of the most outspoken and famous critics of
Gorbachev's and Yeltsin's reforms since the birth of perestroika. She
represents the most orthodox and unrepentant wing of the former
Communist Party.
G. STAROVOITOVA
Until November 1992, Starovoitova was an advisor to President Yeltsin
for inter-ethnic relations. She is a top expert in the area of ethnic
relocations within the former USSR. She had been a close follower of
Andrei Sakharov. Starovoitova has repeatedly made accurate forecasts of
ethnic conflicts, such as the conflicts in Karabakh and the Northern
Caucasus. She is regarded as a leading authority on the question of
national minorities within Russia and the former Soviet Union.
A. VLADIMIROV
As an expert on national security, Major-General Vladimirov serves as a
military advisor to the Russian Parliament. He is President of the
Independent Association of Military Experts on Political Issues and a
member of the International Non-Government Council for Interaction
Vladimirov was harassed by Communist Party bureaucrats for his efforts
toward radical military reform. During the 1991 coup he was among the
military defenders of Yeltsin and the Parliament.
A.K. TROITSKY
From the moment of his arrival in Moscow, Artemy Kivovich Troitsky has
been an active participant in the Russian rock movement. He was not only
the first rock D.J. and journalist in Russia, but also a key organi7er
of several rock festivals. The author of a series of books about rock
music in the Soviet Union, he has been published in Western countries.
including the United States. Recently he has been working at Russian
state television as the head of the music department with programs on
both radio and television.
B. RAUCHENBACH
Rauchenbach has worked in the missile technology area since 1939 and
currently holds the Chair of Mechanics at Moscow's Institute of Physics
and Technology. During 1941-1945, while in prison, he designed new
missile technology with Korolyov, the father of the Soviet space
industry. He is a full member of the Academy of Sciences of Russia and a
full member of the International Academy of Aeronautics. In addition to
his works in cosmonautics, Rauchenbach is a prominent art critic with
published works on fine arts and theology.
A. SHABAD
Shabad is a theoretical physicist and a long time member of Democratic
Russia. He was a member of the now-disbanded old Russian Parliament,
where he sat on the Commission on Human Rights. He is a member of the
new Parliament and a leading figure in Russia's Choice. He was a
colleague, close friend and open supporter of Andrei Sakharov, even
during Sakharov's long exile in Gorky.
S. KHRAMOV
Chairman of the USSR's first alternative group of trade unions, SOTSPROF
(the Russian abbreviation for "Social Trade Unions"), and a member of
the Russian Tripartite Regulatory Committee for Social and Labor
Relations, Khramov is convinced that the trade union movement is a vital
tool to avoid social conflict. Currently there are 470,000 members of
SOTSPROF in seven all-Russian trade unions. He believes that strikes
should be used only as an absolute last resort. He is also a member if
the President's Commission on the Agreement on Civic Accord.
A.G. ISHKOV
Ishkov is the Chairman of the Moscow City Council on the Protection of
the Environment and Natural Resources. He is a professor of Chemistry
and a member of the Russian Ecological Academy. He has written
extensively on environmental issues and problems in Russia.
O. BELOSTOTSKAYA
Currently, Dr. Belostotskaya is a Senior Member in the General Allergy
Department of the Russian Federal Center of Allergy and Immunology. She
works with a wide spectrum of problems in the sphere of allergy and
clinical immunology, particularly bronchial asthma. Dr. Belostotskaya
has been published in Russia, Europe and the United States, and has
presented papers at scientific conterences worldwide. She also has
clinical experience in medical and research centers, such as Ravia
University in Italy and the Immunology Research Institute of New
England. Her lecture will cover the history of health care in the Soviet
Union and Russia, the beginning of health insurance, and the
organization of allergy and immunology services in Russia. An excursion
to a Russian hospital accompanies the lecture.
B. MISNIK
Boris Misnik is the Chairman of the influential Russian Metallurgical
Mining Trade Union. He made himself the focus of public attention by
withdrawing his trade union from the Federation of Independent Trade
Unions of Russia, the legal successor of the USSR's state trade unions.
He is committed to the idea of building a network of "community
partnerships" to deal with social ills.
I. ANTONOVA
Antonova is the Director of the Pushkin Museum of
FineArts,oneofMoscow'sforemostmuseums. She is a member of the Russian
Educational Academy and a Merited Worker of Russia, a title conferred by
the government upon individuals who have distinguished themselves in the
promotion of the arts.
B. ORLOV
Boris Orlov is one of Russia's most authoritative experts on
social-democratic movements. Until December 1992 he was Co-Chairman of
the Social-Democratic Party of Russia. He is a full professor and
Chairman at the Social-Science Research Institute of the Academy of
Sciences. He is a prominent expert on the various social democratic
movements in Western Europe.
FATHER VLADIMIR
Father Vladimir is a priest at the St. Boris and Gleb Church in Moscow.
He holds a Ph.D. in theology. Father Vladimir is well-known as a
reformer in the Russian Orthodox Church, and for working for religious
reform within and without the organization. He has also been a Moscow
city councilman.
S.V.ENGELGARDT-URKOV
Engelgardt-Urkov is the Grand Marshal of the Orthodox-Monarchist Party,
which favors a complete return to the Tsarist, Christian State
overthrown in the February Revolution. He is also the Chairman of the
Orthodox Christian Trade Union of Moscow and the editor of the
theoretical magazine Issues of Monarchist Statehood. Before the 1991
coup the political influence of the monarchists was limited, but the
cultural impact of their existence is great and growing greater. With
the return of the remnants of the Romanov royal family, the monarchists
have become more numerous.
Y.VATULYA
Vatulya made her start as a ballet dancer in Moscow's Stanislavsky and
Nemirovich Danchenko Academic Musical Theatre in 1972. Two years later
she joined the Bolshoi Theatre where she remained for eighteen years,
performing Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and Don Quixote among many others.
Currently she is teaching at the Moscow Academy of Choreography.
I.M. ZAKSENBERG
Zaksenberg is the Chairman of the famous Lenin Kolkhoz (collective farm)
outside Moscow. Under perestroika, when other farms failed, the Lenin
Kolkhoz was a model producer, a successful blend of Communist and market
strategies. He believes collective farms can still be as effective as
private enterprises.
A.V.FIRSOV
A.V. Firsov may be a familiar face having been a star hockey player for
the world-champion Soviet Union hockey team in the 1968 and 1972 Olympic
Games. During perestroika he began a political career, rising to the
Congress of Peoples ' Deputies. He is a spokesman for the athletic
community in Russia and an avid reformer for athletic satety and
athletes' rights. He has long been an active organizer of the Special
Olympics in Russia.
S.KALLOSH
Kallosh is a prominent composer. He has written several operas and
ballets, including versions of Macbeth, Faustus and Tristan and Isolde.
He has written music in the Greek and Latin languages and won a contest
for Christian hymns sponsored by Billy Graham. He was born in Romania in
1935 .
