Askar Akayev was born on November 10, 1944 in the village of Kyzyl-Bairak, Keminsky District, into the
family of a collective-farm worker. He started working as a metalworker at the FRUNZEMASH factory in
1961. In 1968 he graduated from the Leningrad Institute of Precise Mechanics and Optics.
Between 1972 and 1973 he worked in the Frunze Polytechnic Institute, and then again in the Leningrad
Institute of Precise Mechanics and Optics as a senior researcher, ad a senior teacher.
In 1976 Askar Akayev returned to the capital of the Republic, worked there as a senior teacher, an
associate professor, and then as head of a department of the Polytechnic Institute. From 1986 to 1987
he was Head of the Department for Science and Educational Institutions in the Central Committee of the
Communist Party of Kyrgyzstan. In 1987 he was elected Vice-President of the Academy of Sciences and two
years later was elected its president. That same year Askar Akayev was elected a People" Deputy of the USSR.
Askar Akayev is a Doctor of Science. professor, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the
Kyrgyz Republic, and is well known in the international scientific world as a physicist. He has contributed
extensively with expertise in solving problems of computer engineering and quantum radio physics; he is
also one of the developers of optic computer engineering.
At a Special Session of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic, held in October 1990, Askar Akayev was
elected President of Kyrgyzstan. As The President of Kyrgyzstan, he actively opposed the August coup
attempt in 1991.
On October 12, 1991 Askar Akayev became the first nationally chosen President of Kyrgyzstan. After the
new Constitution of Kyrgyzstan was adopted in May 1993, there arose the necessity of holding a referendum
to determine the level of confidence in Askar Akayev. In January 1994, the people of Kyrgyzstan ratified
the powers of the head of Kyrgyzstan.
Askar Akayev has lead Kyrgyzstan through a most difficult period of its history. With him, the Republic found
its independence, became a full member of the world community and the democratic changes, which he brought in,
found understanding and recognition in the world.
The President of Kyrgyzstan, Askar Akayev, truly remains a guarantor of peace, tranquillity and international
concord in the Republic in this difficult period of economic reforms.
