Hungarian GP
Sunday Race
Jean made a good start again but was beaten to the first corner by he's team mate
Diniz, who made an even better start. Jean made a couple of moves on Pedro, but the
Hungaroring is not made for overtaking, not even for Jean. So on lap 19 Pedro was told to
let Jean pass, and he did, and spun just after. Jean was on a charge and some points was
in sight, but bad luck strikes again, and a loss of fuel pressure at both pit-stops. Then
two laps from the finish line, no pressure for the third time this race...Saturday Qualifying
Jean had a terrifying moment in the free practice on Saturday morning. He came up behind
Pedri de la Rosa who was going very slow in the racing Line, Jean had nothing to do but to
steer of the track to avoid him.
He was taken to hospital, but after a check-up he was back in action at qualifying with a
hurting ankle. Based on this the 11th time was good.

Hungaroring is a tight and twisty circuit so the Saturday qualification is more important
than ever. This is what Jean has to say about the Hungaroring:
"To record a quick lap, or capitalize on any overtaking opportunity, this is a
circuit that demands patience and precision. The only real chance to pass presents itself
at the end of the start/finish straight and that relies on a perfect exit from the uphill
right-hander that leads on to that section. You have to judge things to perfection, or you
can be left trailing around in a traffic jam"
Hungary 1998
Jean's words after the 1998 Hungarian GP:
"Once again I had a good start, and all afternoon I
was quicker than both Benettons. We were able to run very close together fighting
initially for sixth place, but on the 21st lap the electronic throttle bipper didn't work
properly when I was changing down a gear. The rear end locked up momentarily and I ran
wide and slid into the gravel, but I was able to get straight back on to the track and
didn't actually lose too much time. After that I really pushed very hard, and our strategy
and pitwork was very good again.
The car was very, very consistent, and we just need a little bit more of everything to be
closer to the top guys. I needed maybe another lap and I would have caught Hakkinen for
the last point, but as it was the race was not long enough!" |
