Belgian GP Comments

Sunday
Jean Alesi:
"Right at the start I had drama, when Zonta stalled on the grid. If that happens to cars several rows ahead you have a reasonable chance to escape, but when it happens to one right in front of you it’s very difficult. I don’t know how much I missed the BAR by, but it wasn’t much! Then later I think I touched Villeneuve’s rear tyres with my car’s nose, going up the straight…
The race again showed the car’s capacity in race trim, but it’s always very difficult when you start so far back.
"

Pedro Diniz:
"It was a very difficult race for me. The set-up wasn’t right and the car had poor balance and grip. After my first stop I lost control at Eau Rouge, but you don’t usually get into trouble at the point where the spin began, so I’m not sure why it happened. I thought it was going to be a big crash, but fortunately I spun through 360 degrees and scrubbed off a fair bit of speed before I hit the tyre wall. I was lucky."

Peter Sauber:
"I regret that Jean was only able to start 16th, because he drove a totally committed race. He passed seven cars, at a time when overtaking is not supposed to be possible in F1. Alert observers will appreciate that he needed a competitive car to do this."

Saturday

Jean Alesi:
"I continued to struggle to balance the car today, and was still hampered by too much understeer in the middle of fast corners. Right at the end I stopped with an electrical problem."

Pedro Diniz:
"My car was still understeering to begin, but towards the end of free practice this morning we began to move in the right direction and the balance was definitely better for qualifying, though still not perfect. On my last run my first two sector times were okay, but I lost time with understeer in the final part of the lap. I was also unlucky to be out on the track starting quick laps each time a BAR crashed. That lost me two runs, but I'm glad Jacques and Ricardo are okay."

Peter Sauber:
"For qualifying at Spa we expected more, for sure. Both interruptions due to the shunts of Villeneuve and Zonta affected us, certainly, but they are not an excuse. The reasons for this unexpected poor result lie in the aerodynamic performance of our car."

Friday

Jean Alesi:
I am not satisfied today. I had a little bit too much understeer in the medium-speed corners, and low grip in general. The car was sliding in the slower corners, and felt, very nervous at high speed.

Pedro Diniz:
It's been a difficult day for me. I didn't really like the set-up I had. There was too much understeer in mid-corner, and I think that was the reason I spun. Unfortunately, I also had a problem with a seized rear wheel nut, and that cost me a lot of track time this morning.

Peter Sauber:
For Jean today was a practice day with 30 laps and no significant technical problems, on a track that he likes and which today was dry. Pedro's progress was hampered by the problem with a rear hub. We hope that he has sufficent running time tomorrow to compensate before qualifying.
