MTV and VH1 are rushing to outdo each other with ambitious promotional plans linked to the Rolling Stones'
upcoming world tour.
The tour, which kicks off September 23 in Chicago, marks the Stones' 13th jaunt around
North America since they first crossed the Atlantic in June 1964.
The cable music channels, which are both owned by Viacom, jumped on the juggernaut with separate statements
outlining various exclusive deals with the band.
MTV has snagged the U.S. premiere rights to the first two videos from the Stones' "Bridges To Babylon" album,
which will be released domestically September 30. The first video, "Has Anybody Seen My Baby?"
will premiere later this month.
When the group plays at Chicago's Soldier Field, both networks will be there: VH1 has scored the exclusive rights to screen
the first two songs live. MTV will also broadcast live, although its plans were not detailed in the statement.
The Stones will even make appearances at the networks' awards shows. The MTV Video Music Awards on September 4
will feature a live satellite appearance from the Stones' rehearsal facility in Toronto.
The band performed two songs at the 1994 awards show, and received a lifetime achievement award.
The band will turn up to the VH1 Fashion Awards, which will be taped in New York October 24 for broadcast four days later.
VH1 will also rename itself "Stones TV: Stoned Again" for a week in late September, and screen what it described as
"the definitive collection of Rolling Stones concerts, movies and events".
The Rolling Stones will help MTV launch its new weekly music series "Live At the 10 Spot," in which the band will perform
live "for 30 minutes or more in an intimate club setting." It will air October 14, and be preceded by "an in-depth
exclusive" MTV News interview with the band.
