My grandfather Sebastião da Silva Maltez, son of José da Silva Maltez & Maria da Guia Benta, was born in Golegã, as well as his five brothers and four sisters. He was a fisherman and later on became a farmer. He married Maria da Conceição Gouveia, daughter of João Rebelo Gouveia and Maria dos Anjos.

My grandparents had six children of which the second one, Joaquim da Silva Maltez was my own father. Sebastião da Silva Maltez died in Amadora a town nearby Lisbon. My grandmother had diedsome years earlier in Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal.

His grandfather Joaquim da Silva Maltez, is by the way the first ancestor with the Maltez surname that we know of. We know that he lived in Golegã and that his children were born there, but we don't know for sure neither if Golegã was his birthplace nor if he was born somewhere else. He ought have been born around 1790, making him the patronym figure of the Maltez surname of our branch of the family.

Golegã is a quiet, small town situated in the beautiful province of Ribatejo in Portugal, and belonging to the district of Santarém, with vast, great, fertile green plains, also known as 'lezírias' stretching into the horizont. Often flooded by the river Tagus, Golegã is also very proud of its tradition of horse breeding, gathering crowds of horse-lovers in its colourful annual horse fair in November, reaching its higher eagerness at S. Martinho's day, the 11th.  Golegã also contributes with its historical sites to the incredible richness of the legacy of the moors and other ethnic groups, throughout the country.

Any clue about my second great-grandfather Joaquim da Silva Maltez, could be conducive to a breakthrough in this research. Some projects are underway which will be of interest to anyone concerned with this field, so check this site from time to time to see the new developments.
