Will Smith is the second of four kids (two sisters, one brother) to Caroline och Willard C. Smith Sr.
Caroline worked on a school board and the father on a refrigiration company. He later turnes into a mechanic.
Unfortunatley his parents divorced when Will was 13.
Will grew up in Philadelphia and graduated from Overbrook High School in Winfield, Pensylvania.
Will was actually so good in school, maths especially, that M.I.T. (Masschussets Institution of Technoligy) offered him a scholarship.
However, he turned it down because he wanted to give showbiz his all.
As a kid he was very interested in dinosaurs and wanted to become a paleontologist.
Why "Fresh Prince"?
Back in school, Will had an extraorinare talent to sit in class and talk to his friends and still hearing what the teacher was saying. So when they asked him about what thay had said he would answer correctly. Add this with his ability to come up with quick excuses for delayed essay or arriving late to class. One teacher found all this so charming that she started calling him "the Prince". Around mid-eighties, the term "fresh" was very popular in rap circles. So Will added this slang word with his nick-name and got the name he used to get to the top, The Fresh Prince...
MUSICAL CAREER
He's been rapping since he was twelve, even though it back then was mostly for fun. But in 1981 Will was to meet someone who would change his life...
He's real career started at a party that took place on Will's mother's block.
DJ at this party was Jeffrey "Jeff" Townes, (at that time, according to himself, the best DJ in Philly), who started disc jocking at the age of ten.
Jeff had heard about Will, but was already with a partner. Smith still asked if he could come in as a substitue and Jeff accepted.
As the night went on, it prooved that their personal chemistry was perfect.
For instance, Jeff had brought canned fart-spray, and he used this...
They both cracked up laughing.
- When I found Will was down with the same humor, that was when we really clicked! - Jazzy Jeff
Will gav Jeff sitt telefonnummer och senare spelade de ihop. Will var nu 18 och Jeff 21...
From the start, the two wanted to be like Run D.M.C., because they thought it was cool with all the golden chains and chicks and all that.
But Will's father occured to be a problem. He gave his son one year to succeed.
"Otherwise you'll have to get yourself an education and we'll send you to college."
Two years later Will and Jeff won the rap-music's first Grammy with "He's the DJ, I'm the rapper"...
"DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince" made their debut with Girls ain't nothing but trouble from Indie Word Records.
Since then, they have between 1987 - 93 won two Grammy's.
* I think I can beat Mike Tyson (-88)
* Summertime (-91) (By MTV voted the second best summer-track ever.)
As the duo's popularity took off, started making lots of money. Money wich he then spent on a house, six cars, two motorcycles and jewelry. And more...
Thanks to this, the head of an enforcement district cared especially for Mr. Smith.
As just about every artist, Will made videos to his hits. One of these hits was Parents just don't understand
THE FRESH PRINCE OF BEL-AIR
In 1989 Quincy Jones watched the previously menchoned video to Parents just don't understand, and thought he saw an actor in this Will Smith. He invited Will to his house,
where he already had Benny Medina and a number of NBC-guys who had an idea;
A sit-combased on Medina's life in Beverly Hills. Beacause Benny Medina grew up in a low-class family
but got to live in posher surroundings so that he would get better ground to build on during his life. For sveral years, Benny had tried to get a Hollywood contract and make a movie out of this, but had been rejected.
Now he saw another chance, and Will was very enthusiastic to the idea, as were NBC, who later broadcasted "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air". Simple plot, Will played himself with a touch of Medina.
A street-smart kid who had been moved to a better place for a better life.
Even Jazzy Jeff has a role in the series, Will's friend Jazz...
Now there was something bugging Will as he stood at the set, ready to shoot his first scene of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
From the day he was asked to take the part, to this moment, minutes from "Action!", not a single soul had asked him whether or not he could actually act!
The series, in wich Will felt fine, lasted for six years. After that, Will no longer had time for it. During this time, it had touched important issues like black supression, violence and a whole lot more.
JEFF...
Nowadays, Jeff lives in Philly.
GIRLS...
Will Smith has never been the type of guy to mess around with two or three at a time. Well, he did have one short period in wich he was in a hunting-mood.
He stooped doing this, however, due to lack of challenge.
He thinks it's very much harder to stick to one woman then to go from one to another, right to left.
Not every girl falls for him though. In ninth grade something happened, that probably surprized him.
Will had been looking at this girl, Charlotte Holmes, for about six months thinking about how cute she was, but never did he talk to her.
Then, one day, when about 500 students were assembled to sing and all where sitting in rows, Will got his heart up to speak.
- Hey, Charlotte! How are ya? he yelled to her as she sat a few rows infront of him.
She turned around and said:
- Too good for you.
This was one of the most embarrassing moments of his life.
In 1988 Will met Tanya Moore, while he was performing at San Diego State University, where she studied.I don't know for how long it lasted, but it exceeded the one(or two?)-year barrier.
Next I now is the woman he married in 1992, Sherre Zampino. She gave birth to Will's first child Trey, who saw daylight that same year.
Inspite having this baby, they wouldn't stay forever together, and in 1995 that tale was over.
It was hard for Will to recover from such a heavy loss, but he was helped by someone who he had met at the set of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
Someone who applied for the part as Will's girlfriend "Lisa" (later given to Nia Long), but was rated to short.
Someone named Jada Pinkett.
Inspite their lengthy differences the two turtle-doves ended up together and exghanged rings infront of a minister in Baltimore on December 31, 1998.
Will and Jada now have a son of their own too, Jaden Christopher Syre Smith.
