Important information when Importing your new car
disconnect from the internet & take time to read this info. It will hopefully simplify the rules & regs that usually frighten people. We take care of the greater part of the paper work but its still worth knowing the rules.
There has never been a better time to import a car into the United Kingdom from another EU country. Economic conditions, dominated by the strong pound, mean that you can save thousands of pounds on most models by simply purchasing abroad. However, some people, through a campaign of mis-information initiated by UK dealers, have been convinced that there is a 'risk' involved and that a car bought abroad is somehow different to the one bought at their local dealer. This is nonsense and to suggest that VW or any other manufacturer has a special factory building suspect cars with suspect materials is pure fantasy !
Britain, as a full member of the EU, is part of the EU free market and UK citizens are entitled to buy or sell goods within the EU at will. All goods, including cars, sold within the EU must comply with EU safety standards, be marked as such ( CE mark ) and issued with a certificate of conformity. Where differences occur between member nations (eg equipment packages, LHD/RHD etc ) the same standards are extended to include and control the differences.
The only difference between an imported car and a UK bought car is that the import is sourced through another country before entry to the UK - and it's several thousand pounds cheaper too, of course ! The fact is that car manufacturers do not want cars to be imported into the UK as the profits they make in the UK are far higher than in any other EU country and as they see it they are simply protecting their interests. Unfortunately their interests are best served by charging UK customers the highest prices in the European Union. It may not come as a surprise to you to hear that amongst European car manufacturers the UK is known as 'treasure island' ………….
You've decided you are interested in importing a car into the UK - but how is it done ?
1. Firstly, find the model of your choice in the UK then double check the specification and options to make sure you know exactly what it is you want.
2. Contact a dealer abroad who understands the UK market, speaks fluent English and can supply names and telephone numbers of satisfied customers.
3. Make sure you confirm the specification before placing the order, get an idea of delivery time and are told what documents will be supplied with your vehicle. For UK registration and customs handling you will need the following documents ;
All cars sold through Sweden are supplied with these documents and administration costs, local fees and export plates are included in all quotes.
4. A deposit of around 25% of the cars price will be required to secure the order. Only pay this deposit when you are 100% satisfied that the vehicle you are ordering is the same specification as the UK model. Ensure you receive a receipt for this sum.
5. The balance on your vehicle is payable anytime up to the date of delivery / shipping. This balance is in Swedish kroner ( SEK ) - this is very important. At the time of order it is highly recommended that the SEK balance is ordered through your bank in the UK. This can be done by arranging a foreign currency forward contract. This is simply a contract between an individual and a bank for the purchase of a foreign currency on a fixed date. By arranging this contract you will receive a guaranteed exchange rate between sterling and SEK which enables you to calculate in sterling exactly how much your vehicle will cost.
6. As a date of delivery approaches, transport of your vehicle back to the UK must be arranged. This can be done in two ways :
It is wise to ask for details of costs involved in getting your vehicle home before placing your order. If you do arrange shipping and this is included in the price ensure this is stipulated in your order confirmation document.
7. You will now need to transfer the foreign currency you have arranged through the forward contract with your bank. Please allow 5 working days for an electronic money transfer to take place and confirm with your dealer that funds have been received.
What do I do in the UK ?
Your local VRO ( Vehicle Registration Office ) should be contacted as soon as possible after entering the UK. Delays of more than 14 days after entering the UK are considered unacceptable by the VRO and may result in your vehicle being registered as second-hand. They will require copies of the documents with which you were supplied at delivery ( or with the shipped vehicle ). You will then be supplied with UK plates and a registration document. The VRO will also inform customs of your import and you will be billed for VAT within 14 days of registering your vehicle. Please note that the age of the car is shown as from the date of first registration in the country of origin, not UK entry.
Manufacturers warranties are applicable over the entire EU. However the car is not supplied with a dealer warranty. This can be arranged through a local dealer, the AA or the RAC.
