The first thing you'll notice after starting the game is the
graphics. Hey, future Los Angeles almost looks like a real
city! The next thing is the complexity and details. You can
turn on/off the light in rooms, look at yourself in mirrors,
hear helicopters fly over your head, watch closed-circuit
television, go to the toilet etc.
......................
After you've walked around for a while there will be an
earthquake or two. But that's not all, you'll see parts of
buildings collapse, cracks in the floor etc. Well, details are
fun, but is it possible for you to damage/destroy things?
Yes! Try to shoot at a toilet. Very fun! Or try to spot a
manhole cover. Blow it up in the air, and jump down!
During the game, you'll notice lots of half-naked ladies.
They're everywhere, on posters, playbills, in movies and
live. Sex sells.
The music changes along with the scenarios. When you go
into a disco (or nearby), for instance, you hear disco
music. You can walk around in the streets of Los Angeles
(only a limited area in each level) and inside buildings.
Yes, everything looks much like inside real buildings. A
bar looks like a bar and a cinema like a cinema. Duke
Nukem 3D is much more "realistic" than any other game in
this genre.
Your enemies, i.e. the aliens, don't look as realistic as
everything else. Seems like they're some relatives of those
in Doom.
Duke Nukem has full movement. You can walk, run,
jump, crawl, swim and fly (requires a jetpack). Looking
up and down is no problem.
Several weapons, such as pistol, shot-gun, chain-gun and
fire-bombs, are at your disposal. Kicking is also possible.
As other items like access cards and medicine packs, you
must first find and pick up weapons in order to use them.
I mentioned it above, but do it again. The graphics are
pretty good, at least in the high detail levels - the low ones
look corny. You can select between four resolutions:
320x200, 320x400, 640x480 and 800x600. All in 256
colors.
Even if you think you don't like games like this, I think
you'll enjoy Duke Nukem 3D. If you do like the genre -
you'll be in heaven! Try it! Buy it! Duke Nukem 3D is to
Doom what Doom was to Wolfenstein 3D.
