Activision has released a new Interstate 76 version, called
Interstate 76 Arsenal. It contains the original game
optimized for 3D accelerators and the Nitro Pack - new
missions, cars, weapons etc.
When a game has a cool intro, looking like a movie from
the 70's, with the right funk music, hair styles, clothes etc.,
you know it can only mean two things: It's just another
mediocre title with a cool intro, or a game with personality
and atmosphere. Interstate 76 is the latter.
The year is 76 and you, Groove Champion and your
friends Taurus and Skeeter, are all auto-vigilantes driving
a muscle cars, fighting a gang of other auto-mercenaries
employed by OPEC to destroy much of the US' oil
reserves.
You'll need some serious horse power to run Interstate
76. Even the lower resolutions, with full details, are
somewhat jerky on a normal Pentium. Well, that's when a
lot of things are happening simultaneously, which it does
often. If you're just driving, and you're the only car in the
near distance, it goes smoothly. You can turn off some
details, but it usually doesn't help a lot. SVGA is also
available, and looks very good.
Interstate 76 is based on the same 3D engine as
Mechwarrior 2 (but looks very different). It has a realistic
physics model. The car behaves like a real car when you
brake, accelerate etc.
The idea of giving the game a setting from the 70's, instead
of some distant future, is good. And the way Activision
does it is brilliant. Not only the intro has the right details,
they're in the game itself, too. For example, you and
Taurus (Skeeter doesn't talk much) have radio contact all
the time. He'll talk now and then, and the messages
depend on the situation he is in. For example, when things
do not look good, you get messages like "We need some
damn assistance over here!", "Groove, where the hell are
you?" and "We're gonna die, Groove!" You can also call
up on him, but usually all you get is a poem (he's a former
poet). As you probably understand, Interstate 76 has
characters you can relate to.
The game takes place on the road in the south western
USA, out in the desert. But it's often more off road than
on road. Driving off the roads is no problem. Well, it's
more comfortable to drive on the roads. Also, the cars
take damage, and driving a damaged car can be difficult.
A flat tire is not fun.
The scenery looks quite realistic. When driving you'll meet
other ordinary cars, such as the characteristic yellow
school buses. Here and there, there are bridges, oil wells
etc.
There are several weapons to your disposal, such as
rockets, mines, a machine gun and a hand gun. Yes, this is
more a car combat game than racing only.
Both demos comes with two missions. The first, where
you and Taurus is going to blow up a few cars, is fairly
easy. However, the second are much more difficult.
Interstate 76 is a great game, but has a few glitches here
and there. It will probably appeal to many different
individuals. Those who like car racing, adventure and 3D
shooters. Shareware/demo
