The MIDI  Page

I've collected some MIDI files from some of my favourite artists which, in my opinion, are quite good (the files as well as the artists). You can find them by clicking on the artist above. Oh - if you don't have a proper synth (the Soundblaster AWE-64 in my opinion is *not*), You should try a soft-synth from for example Yamaha (SY-XG50) or Roland (the virtual Sound Canvas).  I use a DB50-XG, mounted on an old SB-16 ASP card. It performs on par with modules costing up to 3 times as much (prices here in Sweden). You can't really get more bang for the buck than that! That is if you have a a sound card with a Waveblaster compatible connector, which oddly enough the AWE-64 and newer AWE-32's do not.

To be fair though, I am considering upgrading to something with more voices and a more fullgrown sound. Currently I'm considering the Roland SC-88PRO and the Yamaha MU-100r, but I just saw that there will be a new Yamaha card out soon(?... no release date on the Yamaha sites yet). It is called SW1000, and is (from the specs) very impressive as it is essentially a MU100r on a PCI-card, with additional multi channel audio recording support(18 bit DAC & 20 bit ADC), but lacking the VL tones of the MU100r. If you want the VL capabilities you can buy an add-on board (as I understand it).

To give you an idea of what you might expect from the Yamaha SY-XG50, I have encoded  two excerpts from a MIDI file, one General MIDI version and one XG-MIDI version as RealAudio files. It's sa song by Rush called "Between the wheels" . This is work in progress.. ;-)

Between the wheel (Rush) 28.8 kbps (Modem) 128 kbps (Dual ISDN)
General MIDI GM-mono GM-stereo(high quality)
XG-MIDI XG-mono XG-stereo(high quality)

That's all for now! Enjoy the MIDIs!
