What do we do and what is the Probation and Parole Service?

Welcome to the Probation and Parole Service in Nacka-Haninge. This page is intended for both special interest groups and the general public.

The Probation and Parole Service in Nacka-Haninge together with the Probation and Parole Service in Södertörn, Asptuna Prison, Beateberg Prison and the Huddinge Remand Centre make up The Prison and Probation Service, Stockholm South.

The Probation and Parole Service is a statutory body under the Swedish Prison and Probation Service (Kriminalvårdsstyrelsen) which answers directly to the Ministry of Justice.

The information provided on this page is also applicable to other regional Prison and Probation Authorities throughout Sweden.

The Probation and Parole Service has three main functions:

(1) To provide supervision and support for offenders sentenced to probation, for offenders released from prison on early release programmes and for offenders sentenced to community work orders, treatment orders or home detention. In the event that offenders should fail to fullfill the demands made of them by the courts with respect to the terms of their sentence (e.g. treatment, contact with probation and parole office etc) the matter is referred to a special board, the Probation and Parole Board, for consideration.

(2) To assist the courts in determining appropriate sentences through an assessment of the accuseds current and past social situations, the accuseds need of and motivation for different forms of psychosocial treatment, the accuseds suitablily for placement in community based programmes and an assessment of treatments likely effect on rescidivism.

(3) To co-ordinate the provision of treatment and/or support programs organised and administered by local government bodies and/or voluntary organisations and, when no appropriate programs are available in the general community, organise and impliment programs that specifically target criminal behavior e.g. programs for violent offenders, alchohol related traffic offences etc.
