Vasco Da Gama & Brazil

Full Name: Edmundo Alves de Souza Neto
Date of Birth: April 2, 1971
Birthplace: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Height: 175 cm
Weight: 72 kg
Previous Clubs: Palmeiras (Brazil), Flamengo (Brazil), Corinthians (Brazil), Fiorentina (Italy)

Controversial but superbly skilled Brazilian striker. On his day, Edmundo is one of the world's most gifted players and can win a match almost single-handed.

Missed out on the 1994 World Cup altogether and in 1998, as an understudy for Ronaldo, made only two brief appearances as a substitute. In June '99, he rejoined Vasco after an 18-month spell with Fiorentina, where he was clearly homesick and failed to settle. Known as the "Animal" for his tempestuous relations with team mates and officials at Vasco Da Gama. Fell out with his teammates at Fiorentina, notably Portuguese star Rui Costa, with whom he refused to talk on and off the pitch. Caused a public storm in Italy by returning to Brazil to take part in Rio de Janeiro carnival parades while his team-mates faced crucial games in the Italian championship.

Broke the Brazilian championship goalscoring record with 29 goals when Vasco da Gama won the title in 1997. Has also played for Flamengo, Palmeiras and Corinthians. Was given a 4 1/2 year semi-open prison sentence for his part in a December 1995 car crash in a plush Rio de Janeiro suburb in which three people died. Has not been picked from Brazil since Wanderley Luxemburgo took over as national team coach. Luxemburgo and Edmundo had several rows when they were together at Palmeiras in the early 1990s.
